What is a Montessori Bed?

A montessori bed, or more commonly known as a toddler bed, is a bed that follows the Montessori Principles which usually incorporates being floor level, allowing freedom of movement, and independence. These beds are commonly found in two variations, both of which we sell, that are the house bed and floor bed.

What are the benefits of a Floor Bed for my Toddler?

There are many benefits to choosing a toddler floor bed. The first is independence. Sleeping in a floor bed encourages the child to develop a sense of independence and autonomy. It can give them a feeling of control over their sleeping environment and help them feel more "grown-up". Another benefit is safety. Floor beds are lower to the ground, which reduces the risk of falls and makes it easier for toddlers to climb in and out of bed. This can help promote a sense of safety and security. A benefit that is not commonly thought of is comfort. Floor beds can be more comfortable for some toddlers, especially if they are used to sleeping on a mat or cot. The firm, supportive sleeping surface can provide a good night's sleep and reduce the risk of waking up with aches and pains. For many parents, convenience is another benefit. Toddler floor beds are often easier for parents to access, making it easier to tuck a toddler in or comfort them during the night if necessary. Lastly, montessori beds make the transition to a big-kid bed easier. It provides a familiar and safe sleeping environment that is still low to the ground and easy for the child to get in and out of.

How Does a Montessori Bed Incorporate The Montessori Method?

Sleep is vital to the growth and health of children (and the well-being of parents). Newborns typically sleep close to their mother as they may need to be nursed in the middle of the night. The Montessori way prefers the use of a bassinet. There should be only a fitted sheet in the bassinet— no bumpers, pillows, or stuffed animals in the sleep area.

Montessori believed that children could self-regulate—that if they’re tired, they could go to sleep of their own volition. To promote sleep she provided low, child-size beds, about six inches off the floor, that babies could safely get into and out of by themselves. Today, many Montessori schools have floor beds for napping. Some parents set up floor beds in their own homes, as well—starting as early as infancy—either in the parents’ room or the child’s bedroom. Of course, every family is different, and you will need to evaluate whether a floor bed would work for yours.

Why Are They So Expensive?

We can not speak for others however our beds are handmade and built with Alder wood. We do not spare on quality or design. We handcraft and package each package individually ourselves. In addition, Alder wood is more expensive and sturdy than any of the woods found on the market. As you also might have heard, the lumber prices have become astronomical due to COVID. This along with labor costs, and the cost to ship has been the true reason why many folks see bed prices rising.

What ages are appropriate for a Floor Bed?

The appropriate age for a toddler to transition from a crib to a floor bed can vary depending on the individual child. However we recommend toddlers greater than 2 years old. It is important to consider a child's physical and emotional development, as well as their sleeping habits, when deciding when to make the transition to a floor bed.

It is also important to note that some children may never be ready for a floor bed and may prefer to continue sleeping in a crib or a traditional bed with a frame. In these cases, it is best to follow the child's lead and make the transition when they are ready.

Regardless of age, it is important to ensure that the child is safe and comfortable in their sleeping environment. A bed that is too big or too high off the ground can pose a risk of falls, while a bed that is too small may not provide enough room for the child to move around comfortably. It is important to choose a floor bed that is the right size for the child and that provides a safe and comfortable sleeping environment.
